Video chat privacy: how to protect yourself
Random video chat is fun because you do not know who comes next. That is also why a few privacy habits matter. These tips work on any service, not only on SpyMeLive.
1. Check what your camera shows
Before you press Start, look at your own preview. Letters with your address, school or work logos, the view from your window, photos on the wall and documents on the desk can all reveal who you are and where you live. A plain wall behind you is the safest background.
2. Keep personal details to yourself
Do not share your full name, address, phone number, school or workplace, social media accounts or card details with someone you just met. A friendly stranger can still collect small details and put them together.
3. Assume the other person can record
SpyMeLive does not record video: it goes directly between the two browsers and never reaches our servers. But nobody can stop the other person from filming their own screen with another device. Do not do anything on camera that you would not want to be seen later.
4. Know the blackmail scam
A common scam works like this: someone flirts, persuades you to undress or do something intimate on camera, records it and then demands money, threatening to send the video to your friends or family. If this happens:
- Stop the conversation and do not pay. Paying usually leads to more demands.
- Do not delete messages or usernames; take screenshots as evidence.
- Report the person on the service and contact your local police.
- If you are under 18, tell a trusted adult. In the UK, the Report Remove tool from Childline and the IWF can help remove images.
5. Do not click links from strangers
Links sent in chat can lead to fake login pages or malware. Moving to another app on a stranger's suggestion is also a common first step in scams.
6. Use Next and Report freely
You never owe anyone a conversation. Tap Next if you feel uncomfortable, and Report if someone breaks the rules. On SpyMeLive you will not be matched with a person you reported again.
