What Happened to Omegle? And What to Use Instead
Omegle, the site that introduced millions of people to random video chat, went offline on 8 November 2023. Here is what happened and what to look for in a replacement.
A short history
Omegle launched in 2009 and became one of the best-known ways to talk to a stranger: you opened the page and were connected to a random person by text or video. It grew for years, largely by word of mouth.
Why it closed
In November 2023 the founder announced that the site was shutting down. The service had faced years of legal pressure over the misuse of the platform, including lawsuits brought by people who said they had been harmed after being matched with abusers. The founder said that the cost and strain of fighting against misuse and of the legal battles were no longer sustainable. The site has not returned in its original form.
What the shutdown showed
The lesson was not that random video chat is impossible, but that an open chat with no age checks, weak reporting and little moderation is very hard to run responsibly. If you are choosing a service now, these are the things worth checking.
- Age rules. Is the service for adults only, and is there anything more than a tick box?
- Reporting. Can you report someone in one tap, and is that person kept away from you afterwards?
- Enforcement. Are repeat offenders actually banned?
- Privacy. Is video recorded? What is stored, and for how long?
- Honesty. Does the site say plainly what it can and cannot do?
